Mount Zion United Methodist welcomes you!

One of the very oldest churches in Marion County, Mt. Zion was founded nearly 200 years ago, in approximately 1829, when Frederick VanGilder, son of Revolutionary War soldier Jacob VanGilder, began holding prayer meetings in area homes.  In 1833, Frederick and his sister Sarah purchased a house in the Mount Zion community and opened it for church services and school.

In 1846 a log church was built on land donated by Frederick and the Mt. Zion Cemetery was established. The congregation outgrew the old log church and the present edifice was built in 1875 at the cost of $1,561.66.

Like all the old churches, Mt. Zion has evolved over the centuries.  But she remains a peaceful, joyous place of historical and spiritual significance, and a Light in Marion County.

The old steeple bell still rings every Sunday morning, as it has since 1875.  We hope you’ll drop by for a visit sometime!
